Fight, Flight, and the Options Nobody Mentions
The water is already ankle-deep in the hallway when the decision has to happen. Not “should we evacuate” — that window closed an hour ago. This decision is smaller and stranger: which direction, which door, carry the toddler or carry the go-bag, because there isn’t time for both hands to be full. A man will tell you, years later, that he doesn’t remember choosing. He remembers being on the other side of the choice, toddler on his hip, bag left behind, and no memory of the half-second in between. That gap isn’t a failure of memory. That gap is the story.
Everyone thinks they know how they’d react. Almost nobody does, and the ones who find out the hard way are usually the ones later ambushed by shame over how their body handled it.
“Fight or Flight” Is a Nice Phrase for an Incomplete List
Somewhere along the way, fight or flight became the entire cultural vocabulary for how humans respond to danger, and that phrase has done real damage by being incomplete. It suggests two options: stand and battle, or run. Clean, active, decisive. It also quietly implies that anything other than fighting or fleeing is somehow lesser — a failure to respond correctly.
Here’s the fuller list, the one your nervous system actually has access to during a natural disaster: fight, flight, freeze, fawn, and flop. Only two of those look like the movies.
Freeze is exactly what it sounds like — the body locking up, unable to move or decide, sometimes for seconds, sometimes for the duration of the event. This is not indecision in the way we normally mean it. It’s a nervous system determining, based on incomplete information processed faster than conscious thought, that stillness is the safest available option. Prey animals freeze. It’s ancient wiring, and it doesn’t check with you first.
Fawn shows up more often in disasters involving other people — shelters, evacuation centers, rescue situations — and looks like frantic appeasement, over-compliance, apologizing to rescuers, minimizing your own needs so as not to be a burden during a moment when you are, factually, in crisis. It’s a survival strategy built for social threats that gets deployed even when the threat is a flood, because the nervous system doesn’t always distinguish cleanly.
Flop is the body’s last resort — a kind of collapse, sometimes literal fainting, sometimes a profound and sudden exhaustion that drops a person mid-crisis. It looks like giving up. It is not giving up. It’s a physiological circuit breaker tripping because the threat has exceeded what fight, flight, or freeze could resolve.
None of these are choices in the way we use that word at the dinner table. You do not select your trauma response from a menu. Your nervous system selects it for you, in milliseconds, based on a threat-assessment process that predates language.
The Guilt That Shows Up Afterward Is Aimed at the Wrong Target
This is where survival mode leaves its second wound, separate from whatever the disaster itself destroyed. People come out the other side of a hurricane, wildfire, tornado, or flood carrying not just loss but judgment — usually self-directed, often brutal. They freeze instead of fighting, and later they call themselves cowards. They fawn over a rescuer instead of asserting a need, and later they call themselves weak. They flop, they black out, they can’t recall the decisive moment, and later they wonder what’s wrong with them for not remembering “being brave.”
None of that is a fair verdict. It’s a verdict rendered by a conscious mind trying to retroactively narrate a process that never consulted the conscious mind in the first place.
Facility staff and case managers carry a version of this that’s compounded by responsibility. When you are the one tasked with managing an evacuation for people who cannot evacuate themselves — residents with mobility limitations, kids with disabilities that make transitions dangerous, patients mid-treatment — survival mode doesn’t excuse you from the job the way it might excuse an individual acting alone. Staff often describe operating in a strange dual state during active disasters: their own nervous system screaming one of the five responses, while professional training and duty of care demand something that looks like calm competence layered on top. That’s not fighting your instincts. That’s running two systems simultaneously, and it’s exhausting in a way that doesn’t fully register until much later.
What Actually Happens in the Body While This Is Unfolding
Understanding the mechanics doesn’t erase what happened, but it does something almost as useful: it takes the moral judgment out of the equation. During an active disaster, the amygdala — the brain’s threat-detection center — takes over decision-making faster than the prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for reasoned, deliberate choice, can weigh in. This isn’t a bug. It’s the entire point of the system. A brain that waited for careful reasoning before reacting to a collapsing structure or rising water would be a brain selected against by evolution a long time ago.
Time perception frequently distorts during these events — survivors commonly report that things felt like they were happening in slow motion, or conversely, that huge chunks of time vanished entirely. Sensory details often become hyper-vivid (the specific sound the wind made, the exact color of the water) while other details, sometimes including one’s own actions, go missing entirely. This is dissociation doing its job: protecting the psyche from being fully present for something overwhelming by letting parts of the experience blur or disappear.

The Point of Knowing This
This isn’t offered as an academic footnote. It’s offered because so many survivors spend years re-litigating their own behavior during the worst moment of their lives, using a standard — cool-headed, deliberate heroism — that was never realistic and was never the actual job of their nervous system in that moment. The job was survival. It got done. However it got done.
If you froze, fawned, flopped, or can’t remember: that was your body keeping you alive using the exact tools it evolved to use. It was not a character judgment, and it does not deserve to be treated like one, including by you.
